A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern Mexico near Puerto Madero on Friday, prompting the US Tsunami Warning System to issue a tsunami threat alert for parts of the Pacific coastline.
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, hazardous tsunami waves are possible along coastlines within 300 km of the earthquake’s epicentre in the Mexico region.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km near Puerto Madero. The tremor was also felt in neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador, with buildings shaking in Guatemala City, according to Reuters.
