JAMMU: Torrential rain triggered flash floods and mudslides in Thathri town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district early Tuesday, damaging houses, vehicles and roads, including stretches of the Doda-Kishtwar highway (NH-244), a key transport link in the region.
Heavy rainfall lashed the town around 2.30 am, inundating parts of Thathri market. According to officials, several houses were buried under mud, boulders and debris, while multiple vehicles were either damaged or washed away. No casualties or injuries were reported.
The Doda-Kishtwar National Highway (NH-244) was blocked at several locations due to landslides, forcing authorities to suspend vehicular movement for the second consecutive day. Restoration teams were deployed to clear debris and reopen the highway.
Doda Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal said emergency response teams had cleared a secondary hill slope in Thathri’s Prem Nagar area and removed debris from the Bagna link road and parts of Chiralla tehsil. Efforts are now focused on restoring traffic on NH-244.
The district administration has advised residents to remain alert and follow official weather advisories as restoration work continues.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said in a post on X that he was in touch with the deputy commissioner to monitor relief and restoration operations. Officials said the administration is assessing the extent of the damage while keeping a close watch on the situation.
