A 28-year-old newlywed woman died after allegedly falling from a residential building in south Delhi’s Palika Kunj on Saturday evening, with her family accusing her husband’s family of dowry harassment and alleging foul play.
Police said they are investigating all possible angles, including suicide, while conducting inquest proceedings. Authorities are also verifying the family’s allegations of dowry-related harassment.
The deceased, Akriti (28), had married on April 24, 2026. She worked as a sales executive with a healthcare company in Chhatarpur and lived in Pushp Vihar with her husband, who is currently unemployed, and her father-in-law, an inspection official with the Delhi government’s labour department.
According to police, the Lodhi Colony police station received information around 8 pm on Saturday that a woman had suffered critical injuries after falling from an NDMC residential building. She was taken to AIIMS, where doctors declared her dead.
Her family has questioned the circumstances surrounding her death.
“We saw her phone, slippers and bag lying on the third floor of the building and nothing else that could count as evidence,” her uncle, Mananjay Sutar, said, adding that the family did not know how she had reached the building.
Akriti’s brother, Amay Sutar, alleged that although her husband had initially refused dowry, the family gifted her gold during the wedding. He claimed that within days of the marriage, her husband began physically assaulting her and demanding cash and a car.
The family further alleged that Akriti frequently called her mother to say she was being “tortured and beaten up.” Her uncle also claimed that the couple, who had known each other since their school days, had frequent arguments and physical altercations even before marriage. According to him, they had a major dispute over alleged dowry demands on Friday, a day before her death, and often argued over her husband’s unemployment.
Mananjay Sutar said Akriti last spoke to her mother at around 7 pm on Saturday after hosting a small post-wedding celebration for colleagues at her workplace. He alleged that her husband had come to pick her up from the office and that she informed her mother she was on her way home.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and that the exact sequence of events leading to Akriti’s death is yet to be established. Authorities are awaiting further evidence, including forensic findings and witness statements, as they examine the allegations made by her family.
