THANE: Two people were killed and another sustained serious injuries after a speeding BMW crashed into a road divider and overturned multiple times on the Mumbai-Vadodara Highway in Maharashtra’s Thane district early Sunday, police said.
The accident occurred at around 4 am near Badlapur while the luxury car was returning from Titwala.
The deceased have been identified as Yogesh Dighe (26) and Rikeba Jacob (24), both residents of Badlapur. A third occupant, Anand, suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thane.
According to the preliminary investigation, the BMW was allegedly travelling at a high speed when it rammed into a road divider. The impact caused the driver to lose control, following which the vehicle overturned several times before coming to a halt.
The crash left the luxury car extensively damaged. Local residents and passing motorists rushed to the scene after hearing the loud impact and alerted emergency services.
Police shifted the bodies to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
“A case of accidental death has been registered, and further investigation is underway,” the station house officer of Badlapur police station said, according to PTI.
A forensic team later visited the accident site and collected evidence. Police said they are investigating all possible angles, including whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
