NEW DELHI: The Centre is set to deploy an indigenous anti-drone shield as part of a proposed ‘smart border security grid’ aimed at curbing the cross-border smuggling of narcotics, arms and ammunition, sources said.
The anti-drone system has been developed domestically and is expected to be deployed soon along vulnerable border stretches. The move comes amid growing concerns over the use of drones by Pakistan’s ISI-backed networks and drug traffickers, who often work in coordination to drop weapons and narcotics into Indian territory, particularly in Punjab.
According to sources, the smart border security grid will combine advanced surveillance technologies, including anti-drone systems, sensors and smart fencing, to strengthen border monitoring and response capabilities.
The initiative will also integrate the Land Port Management System (LPMS), launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday. The digital platform is designed to streamline cargo processing and passenger movement across land ports through end-to-end digital workflows.
Speaking at the launch, Shah said the LPMS would become a critical component of the envisioned smart security grid by bringing all stakeholders and data systems onto a single platform.
“The LPMS system will, in the coming days, become a vital component of the envisioned smart security grid and help ensure both economic and physical security,” Shah said.
He added that the platform would enhance coordination and information-sharing among agencies while supporting the government’s broader smart border strategy.
According to the home minister, LPMS is expected to reduce paperwork by nearly 90%, cut waiting times for cargo trucks by 22–35%, and lower gate processing times by 40–60%. The system is also expected to facilitate trade, improve border infrastructure efficiency and boost tourism.
Officials said the combination of advanced surveillance technologies and digital border management tools would significantly strengthen India’s ability to secure its borders while improving the ease of cross-border movement and commerce.
