NEW DELHI: India and the United States are in discussions over a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France next week, with both sides working to resolve scheduling issues before a final decision is made.
Prime Minister Modi is set to attend the G7 Summit in Evian, France, on June 16–17. If the meeting is confirmed, it would mark the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since Modi’s visit to Washington in February last year, shortly after Trump assumed office for his new term.
As reported earlier, both governments have been exploring the possibility of a bilateral engagement during the summit. While official confirmation is still awaited, diplomatic contacts between New Delhi and Washington remain ongoing.
A meeting between Modi and Trump would provide an opportunity to review progress in India-US relations over the past year and discuss key areas of cooperation, including defence, technology, energy and strategic partnerships.
The talks are also expected to focus on the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement, with both sides aiming to accelerate efforts toward an early conclusion of the deal.
Given the importance of the India-US partnership and the current global economic and geopolitical environment, any interaction between the two leaders at the summit is likely to be closely watched.
