NEW DELHI: A man with a long criminal record was injured in a police encounter near Moolchand Metro Station in southeast Delhi after he allegedly opened fire on a police team attempting to arrest him, officials said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Sonu, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange of fire and was subsequently admitted to a hospital for treatment.
According to police, officers had received specific intelligence regarding Sonu’s movements and laid a trap in a lane near the metro station to apprehend him. When he arrived at the location on a motorcycle, the police team signalled him to stop.
However, instead of complying with the instructions, Sonu allegedly fired at the police personnel. In response, officers retaliated, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.
“During the encounter, the accused suffered a bullet injury in his leg and was successfully overpowered by the police team,” a police source said.
Investigators described Sonu as a history-sheeter and a “bad character” listed at Govindpuri Police Station. According to police records, he is involved in 17 criminal cases, including offences of a serious nature.
Following the encounter, the injured accused was taken into custody and shifted to a hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment under police supervision.
No injuries to police personnel were reported during the operation.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident and are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing as well as Sonu’s involvement in other pending criminal cases.
Officials said further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
