Police in Maharashtra’s Thane district have seized a tanker carrying 25,000 litres of diesel valued at approximately ₹24.5 lakh after discovering that the fuel was allegedly being transported without the required permissions.
The operation was conducted near the Kharigaon toll naka on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway during a routine inspection by government authorities.
Tanker Intercepted During Routine Check
According to officials, the tanker was stopped and inspected by the state government’s supplies department on Thursday afternoon.
During the inspection, authorities allegedly found that the vehicle was transporting a large quantity of diesel without a valid permit or the mandatory authorisation required for the transportation of petroleum products.
Diesel Worth ₹24.5 Lakh Seized
Following the discovery, officials seized the entire consignment of 25,000 litres of diesel along with the tanker.
The value of the seized fuel has been estimated at around ₹24.5 lakh.
Eight Persons Named in Case
Police have registered a case against eight individuals in connection with the alleged illegal transportation of the fuel.
Those booked include the tanker owner and the driver, while the identities and roles of the remaining accused are being investigated.
Probe Underway
Authorities are examining the source and intended destination of the diesel to determine whether the fuel was being diverted for unauthorised sale or distribution.
Officials said further investigation is underway to identify any wider network involved in the illegal transport of petroleum products and to establish whether additional regulatory violations were committed.
Strict Rules Govern Fuel Transportation
The transportation of petroleum products such as diesel is regulated under various safety and licensing requirements. Operators are required to carry valid permits and authorisations to ensure accountability, prevent fuel diversion and maintain public safety.
Police said appropriate legal action would be taken against those found responsible following the completion of the investigation.
