US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested an Indian national accused in a hit-and-run case involving a four-year-old child in Fresno after California authorities allegedly released him from custody.
The accused, identified as Aman Kumar, was arrested in April following the incident and later taken into ICE custody on May 13 outside the California Superior Court in Fresno.
Child Expected To Survive
According to officials, the incident took place on April 28 at around 8 pm when the four-year-old boy wandered onto a road near his home while playing on a swing set.
Authorities said several vehicles stopped to avoid hitting the child. Investigators alleged that Kumar attempted to bypass traffic by swerving into a bike lane, ultimately striking the boy.
Police said the accused briefly stopped before fleeing the scene.
The child was hospitalised and is expected to survive.
ICE Says California Released Him From Jail
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Kumar had been arrested by the Fresno Sheriff’s Department on April 29 and charged with felony hit-and-run causing death or injury.
However, the Department of Homeland Security criticised California’s sanctuary policies, alleging that state authorities released him despite his immigration status.
“This monster who almost killed a 4-year-old boy has been charged with a felony hit and run,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement.
The department further alleged that Kumar had entered the United States illegally through California in 2023 and was released during the administration of former president Joe Biden.
Immigration Proceedings Underway
ICE officials said Kumar was arrested outside the Fresno criminal court and now faces immigration proceedings.
“ICE did what FPD couldn’t and put him back behind bars,” the agency said in its statement.
