US ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday hinted at a significant upcoming collaboration between India and the United States in the nuclear energy sector.

Responding to a social media post by Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding a meeting with representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, Gor wrote: “Big things ahead in India-US collaboration on nuclear energy!”

Maharashtra Pushes Nuclear Energy for Future Growth

Fadnavis highlighted the growing importance of nuclear energy in the global energy transition, stating that while Maharashtra has already invested heavily in solar and wind power, nuclear energy would be essential for ensuring carbon-free and industrial-scale baseload electricity supply.

He noted that Maharashtra receives more than 40 per cent of India’s total foreign investment and hosts nearly 60 per cent of the country’s data centre capacity, particularly in the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai regions.

According to the chief minister, rapidly expanding sectors such as:

  • Semiconductors
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Logistics
  • Advanced manufacturing

are expected to sharply increase electricity demand across the state in the coming years.

US Nuclear Executive Mission Visits India

The remarks came during interactions held under the “US Nuclear Executive Mission to India”, which involved an executive delegation from the Nuclear Energy Institute and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum.

The discussions are being seen as part of broader efforts to deepen India-US cooperation in clean energy and strategic technologies.

Marco Rubio’s India Visit Expected to Focus on Energy Security

The developments come ahead of the upcoming India visit of US secretary of state Marco Rubio from May 23 to 26.

Rubio is scheduled to visit Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi during the four-day trip, which will combine strategic meetings with cultural outreach programmes.

Energy security is expected to be a major theme during his discussions with Indian leaders.

Wider Strategic Issues Also on Agenda

Apart from energy cooperation, Rubio’s meetings are likely to focus on several broader strategic issues, including:

  • Defence cooperation
  • Maritime security
  • Critical technologies
  • Supply-chain resilience

Discussions are also expected around the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, defence interoperability and regional coordination amid increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific region.
