Google has announced a major overhaul of its Search platform at its I/O 2026 keynote, describing it as the most significant transformation to the iconic search box since its launch more than 25 years ago. The update integrates artificial intelligence more deeply into the search experience, introducing interactive results, AI-driven agents, and personalised assistance features.

The shift reflects Google’s growing focus on AI-powered search experiences. According to the company, AI Mode surpassed one billion monthly users within a year of launch, while AI Overviews now reaches 2.5 billion users. Google also said total search queries hit a record high last quarter. The new experience is powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, now the default model for AI Mode globally.

Search box redesigned for longer, more natural queries

Google has redesigned the search box to better handle conversational and complex queries. The new interface expands dynamically as users type and supports inputs including text, images, files, videos, and even open Chrome tabs.

AI-generated suggestions will now appear while users type, going beyond traditional autocomplete. Users can also continue conversations directly from AI Overviews and transition into AI Mode without losing context. The updated search box is rolling out starting today in regions where AI Mode is available.

AI agents will monitor information in the background

Beginning this summer, Google will introduce “information agents” capable of continuously monitoring the web on behalf of users. These agents can track blogs, news websites, social media, shopping platforms, and Google’s own live finance and sports data.

Google’s Vice President of Search, Liz Reid, explained that users could assign agents to follow market trends or track specific conditions, with alerts sent when certain criteria are met. Google also highlighted potential use cases such as apartment hunting and monitoring sneaker releases.

The feature will initially be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Search to generate interactive dashboards and mini apps

Using a new system called Google Antigravity, Search will now be able to create custom layouts, interactive visuals, simulations, and tables in real time.

For example, a query about black holes could produce an interactive visualisation that users can explore through follow-up questions. For long-term tasks like planning a wedding or moving homes, Search can also generate reusable mini apps or dashboards.

Google said the generative UI features will be available to all users for free this summer, while the mini app builder will first launch for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Personal Intelligence expands globally

Google is also expanding its Personal Intelligence features in AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages without requiring a subscription.

Users can already connect Gmail and Google Photos to personalise results, with Calendar integration expected soon. Google emphasised that these integrations remain optional and that users retain control over connected data.
