Police in Belfast have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man who was allegedly attacked by intruders during a robbery at an apartment building in East Belfast.

The victim, identified as Nicholas “Nicky” Gordon, suffered severe injuries after being assaulted inside the building during the early hours of Tuesday morning. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

According to reports cited by the BBC, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) was informed about the incident at around 08:25 BST, although the attack itself is believed to have occurred at approximately 04:45 am.

Detective Chief Inspector Duffie said a “number of intruders” entered the apartment building and “attacked another male before making off”. Ambulance crews responded to the scene shortly afterwards.

Two suspects charged, police continue wider investigation

Police later charged two individuals with aggravated burglary with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The accused include a 24-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman.

Following initial investigations, both suspects were granted police bail.

The PSNI said officers would “continue to work at pace to seek others who may be involved” in the attack.

Community left shocked by violent crime

The incident has triggered concern among local residents and political representatives, who described the crime as deeply disturbing for the East Belfast community.

David Brooks said such violent incidents create fear among local residents.

“It’s not something that you expect to happen in your local community, but the nature of this being a break-in, people worry about their own homes and security as well,” Brooks said.

Peter McReynolds also said the community was shocked and distressed, noting that crimes of this nature are rare in the area.
