AGRA: A nine-year-old boy was allegedly shot dead during a naming ceremony in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district after he refused to bring water for a man who wanted to consume alcohol, police said.
The incident took place around 11 pm on May 1 in Yakutganj village under Sahawar police station limits. The accused, identified as Dhanesh Yadav (45), a resident of Soro in Kasganj, had attended a namkaran (naming) ceremony at the house of Jasveer Gola.
According to police, the accused asked the child, Yash Singh, to fetch water. When the boy refused, the man allegedly lost his temper and shot him at close range before fleeing. “The child was hit in the abdomen and collapsed on the spot,” said Govind Vallabh Sarma.
The injured boy was first taken to the district hospital and later referred to Aligarh for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon.
Following a complaint by the child’s father, Sukhveer Singh, police initially registered a case of attempted murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). After the boy’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder.
Shahida Nasreen said the accused was arrested and an illegal country-made pistol along with cartridges was recovered from his possession. He has been sent to judicial custody after completion of legal formalities.
Police said statements of family members and witnesses have been recorded, and further investigation is ongoing.
