A 60-year-old man was killed while trying to save his son from a violent mob attack in the Kalyan-Dombivli area near Mumbai, police said.
The incident took place on Tuesday night in Ghariwali village in Dombivli, when a group of around 14 people allegedly gathered outside the victim’s house and called his son out.
According to the FIR, the man, identified as Barma Jadhav, was having dinner with his sons Rahul (35) and Dinesh (37) when the group arrived. As soon as Dinesh stepped outside, he was attacked with iron rods and sticks. Hearing the commotion, Barma and Rahul rushed out to help him.
The attackers then turned on them as well. Barma Jadhav sustained severe injuries during the assault and died on the spot, while Dinesh was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Police have registered a case at Manpada police station against 14 accused, including named individuals and several unidentified persons. So far, three women and a 16-year-old minor have been arrested, while others remain absconding.
Investigators suspect that the attack may have been triggered by an earlier dispute, though the exact motive is still being probed. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Hermade said the key accused is among those yet to be apprehended, and further details will emerge after arrests are made.
On Wednesday, the arrested women were produced before a Kalyan court and remanded to police custody until May 1. The minor has been sent to a remand home in Bhiwandi.
Police are continuing efforts to trace the remaining suspects and determine the full circumstances behind the incident.
