US President Donald Trump is unlikely to accept Iran’s latest diplomatic proposal aimed at easing tensions in the Gulf, according to a CNN report.
The proposal from Tehran reportedly suggests restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz while deferring contentious issues surrounding its nuclear programme to future negotiations. However, sources familiar with the discussions told CNN that Trump expressed reservations during a high-level briefing with national security advisers.
One source indicated that Trump is “not likely to accept the plan,” which was recently conveyed to Washington. US officials are said to be wary of reopening the crucial shipping route without securing commitments from Iran on its nuclear enrichment activities or reducing its stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium. Such a move, they fear, could weaken a key point of leverage in ongoing tensions.
At the same time, the report noted the risks of maintaining the current disruption. Continued restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to keep global energy markets tight, pushing fuel prices higher and adding pressure on consumers in the United States.
Following Monday’s meeting, the administration’s next course of action remains uncertain, as geopolitical and economic considerations continue to collide.
