A seven-year-old child died and at least 18 others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming contaminated street food in Giridih district, police said.

The incident occurred in Leda Bajto village under the Mufassil police station limits, where a local vendor had sold golgappa and chaat on Saturday evening. Several villagers, including women and children, consumed the food.

According to Sadar sub-divisional police officer Jeetwahan Oraon, those who ate the items began falling ill later that night. By Sunday morning, more than 20 people were rushed to Sadar Hospital with symptoms of severe illness.

Doctors confirmed the cases as food poisoning, with one child succumbing to the condition. The remaining patients are currently undergoing treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are searching for the cart vendor responsible.
