Kodagu: A US tourist who was allegedly assaulted at a homestay has told investigators she was immobilised after consuming a spiked drink and later prevented from seeking help for days.
The incident occurred on April 12 at a homestay near Kutta. Two people—the caretaker Brijesh Kumar and the owner Vishal Ponnappa—have been arrested so far, police said.
“I was conscious but unable to move”
In her statement, the woman, a visitor from Michigan, said she had checked into the property as a solo traveller after an earlier stay with a colleague.
She told police that shortly after arrival, she was given a welcome drink and became drowsy. When she regained partial awareness, she realised she was being assaulted.
“I could see and feel everything, but I couldn’t move,” she reportedly said, describing the hours-long ordeal.
Alleged attempts to silence her
Investigators said the survivor was allegedly discouraged from contacting police, seeking medical help, or speaking to anyone about the incident. She was reportedly confined to the property for several days and allowed to communicate only via text.
Police noted that she appeared severely traumatised and that there were attempts by the accused to suppress the incident.
During this period, she managed to alert a friend in the United States through messages. Acting on the friend’s advice, she eventually sought help.
Escape and complaint
The woman was able to leave the homestay on April 16 and travelled to Mysuru, where she contacted a liaison volunteer after her friend had already informed the US consulate.
Before leaving, she preserved key items—including bedsheets and personal effects—which police say could serve as crucial evidence in court.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the case, examining allegations of assault, unlawful confinement, and attempts to obstruct reporting.
