A US national has alleged she was raped at a homestay in Kutta, in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, in an incident that has raised serious concerns about tourist safety in the region.

According to her complaint, the survivor—a Washington-based solo traveller—was served a drink allegedly laced with intoxicants, after which she slipped into a semi-conscious state and was assaulted. She further claimed she was unable to seek help immediately as the property’s Wi-Fi remained disconnected for three days following the incident.

Police said medical examination has confirmed sexual assault. A cook employed at the homestay has been arrested on rape charges, while the property owner, Vishal Ponnana, has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to suppress the incident. Both have been remanded to judicial custody till May 3.

The survivor had checked into the homestay on April 12 for a second visit, having stayed there the previous month. The case came to light after she contacted the US Embassy in New Delhi on April 17. The information was relayed to authorities, leading to a case being registered on April 19.

She remained at the property until April 17 before travelling to Mysuru, where she was admitted to a private hospital. Police said she chose to report the incident only after leaving Kodagu.

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said action was initiated following communication from the Union Home Ministry. “We will verify whether the homestay had proper licensing and followed standard operating procedures. If violations are found, strict action will be taken,” he said.

Local MLA and legal adviser to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, A. S. Ponnanna, stated that certain details are being withheld to protect the survivor’s identity, adding that she has requested privacy until returning to the US.

Kodagu district in-charge minister N. S. Boseraju has directed officials to conduct a thorough investigation. Police said forensic analysis and digital evidence collection are ongoing, and all possible angles—including potential complicity—are being examined.

The homestay management has said it has shared CCTV footage with investigators and temporarily halted bookings.

Reacting to the incident, BJP MLC C. T. Ravi termed the assault “deeply shameful,” saying such crimes go against India’s ethos of hospitality and calling for swift justice.
