A 55-year-old gold trader, Kaptan Singh Sardar, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Para, Lucknow, on Wednesday—hours before a scheduled court hearing in a dowry-related case involving his family.

According to police, Sardar—who was also named in the FIR—went to a first-floor room around 11:30 am and used his licensed firearm to shoot himself. Family members rushed in after hearing the gunshot and found him lying in a pool of blood. He died on the spot.

Para SHO Suresh Singh said the weapon has been recovered and the body sent for post-mortem examination.

Police said preliminary findings suggest the incident may be linked to a family dispute. Sources indicated that Sardar had been under stress due to the ongoing dowry case, which was listed for hearing the same day.

At the time of the incident, most family members had reportedly gone to attend the court proceedings, while two women were present in separate rooms inside the house.

Originally from Kasganj, Sardar had been living in Lucknow with two of his sons and their families, while other relatives reside in his native district.

Statements of neighbours and family members are being recorded as part of the investigation. Police officials said the exact cause behind the incident will be determined after the post-mortem report and a detailed probe.
