NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack, marking its first anniversary with a message of unity and determination against terrorism.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister remembered the victims, saying the nation continues to mourn the innocent lives lost in last year’s brutal attack. He also expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, acknowledging their enduring grief.

“As a nation, we stand united in sorrow and resolve. India will never bow to terrorism. The sinister intentions of those behind such acts will never succeed,” he added.

Army asserts ‘justice will be served’

Echoing the Prime Minister’s sentiments, the Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and justice. In its message, it warned that any act against India would invite a decisive response.

The Army also highlighted “Operation Mahadev,” noting that forces conducted an intensive 93-day search across nearly 300 sq km of difficult terrain, ultimately neutralising the three attackers involved. It added that “Operation Sindoor” remains ongoing.

The attack and India’s response

The terror attack on April 22, 2025, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 civilians. The victims were reportedly singled out based on religion and killed in front of their families, triggering nationwide outrage.

In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, 2025, targeting terror infrastructure across the border. Nine key launchpads linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen were destroyed, and more than 100 terrorists were reportedly eliminated.

Pakistan’s retaliation led to a brief four-day military escalation before a ceasefire was reached on May 10, following a request from Islamabad.

Subsequently, under “Operation Mahadev,” Indian forces tracked down and eliminated the three perpetrators responsible for the Pahalgam attack, reinforcing the message that those behind such acts will be brought to justice.
