Dutch wind-assisted propulsion specialist Econowind is pushing into the deepsea segment with a 30-metre 5-series VentoFoil suction wing for oceangoing vessels, according to Econowind.

The unit, unveiled in Heeg, scales up the company’s 3-series platform as it targets larger ships and longer trades where fuel savings are more material.

The move follows sales of more than 150 suction wings across multiple vessel types, with the company shifting from shortsea uptake to deepsea deployment.

The first 5-series will be installed this summer on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping, marking the commercial entry point for the larger unit.

The order reflects continued uptake of wind-assisted propulsion as owners seek immediate gains in fuel efficiency.

“As a returning customer, we are pleased to use VentoFoils again on our vessels, now in the form of the 5-series,” said Johan Boomsma of Boomsma Shipping. “Wind propulsion has proven its value both economically and environmentally. With high fuel prices adding to the urgency, this is a logical next step for us. Energy efficiency is high on our agenda, which is why our eight newbuild vessels will be all delivered wind-ready. The first, Frisian Future, will enter service in May.”

Econowind is aligning production with Asian shipbuilding capacity to support integration into newbuild programmes and streamline delivery of larger units.

“The 3-series has shown that our technology works in daily operations,” said Chiel de Leeuw, chief commercial officer of Econowind. “With the 5-series, we are bringing that proven concept into the deepsea market.”

The VentoFoil uses boundary-layer suction to generate additional thrust from wind, reducing main engine load. The system is designed with limited deck impact, bridge-controlled operation and the ability to tilt units for cargo handling and air-draught constraints.

Econowind is a Netherlands-based developer of suction wing systems supplying wind-assisted propulsion solutions for retrofit and newbuild vessels across commercial shipping segments.

Boomsma Shipping is a privately owned Dutch shipping company operating a fleet of multipurpose vessels engaged in regional cargo trades and fleet renewal programmes.
