PUNE: A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her six-year-old son with the help of her live-in partner at an apartment in Kuruli village in Pune’s Khed area on April 4, police said.
According to investigators, the child was killed by repeatedly hitting his head against a bathroom wall and then drowning him in a bucket.
After the incident, the woman and her partner allegedly transported the child’s body to her parents’ home in Beed district, claiming he had died of a heart attack. However, her father grew suspicious and informed the boy’s paternal family. When they noticed injury marks on the body, they alerted the police.
The Parali Rural police sent the body for post-mortem, which confirmed drowning as the cause of death. Initially registered as an accidental death, the case took a turn after further investigation.
Police sub-inspector S.R. Jaybhaye of South Mahalunge police said the woman later confessed during interrogation. She has been arrested, while a search is underway for her partner, who is currently absconding.
The accused woman, originally from Beed district, had been living separately from her husband due to a dispute. About four months ago, she moved to Kuruli with her husband’s friend—a cab driver—and began living with him along with her son.
Police said that over the past month, the partner had been pressuring her to send the child away, leading to frequent arguments. During questioning, the woman allegedly stated that the child had become an “obstacle” in her new relationship.
Following the murder, the duo transported the body in the partner’s cab. The woman has been remanded to five days of police custody, and further investigation is ongoing.
