MEERUT: A food manufacturing unit in Pannapuri, Hapur, has been sealed after a raid by the food safety department uncovered the production of adulterated tomato sauce under highly unhygienic conditions.

Officials said the unit was using vegetable pulp, acids, and banned synthetic colours to manufacture the sauce. Nearly 200 litres of the adulterated product were seized during the operation. The sauce was allegedly being supplied to local eateries and street vendors at as little as ₹20 per litre.

Food Commissioner Sunil Kumar confirmed that rotten materials, chemical substances, and prohibited colours were found at the facility. “Samples have been sent for laboratory testing. Prima facie, the product appears unsafe for consumption,” he said.

The entire stock has been confiscated, and steps are underway to destroy it. Authorities have also launched an investigation to trace others involved in the supply and distribution network.

Kumar said strict legal action would be taken based on the lab results. “If the samples are found unsafe, a case will be registered against the operator,” he added.

He also advised consumers to exercise caution while eating at roadside stalls. “Avoid unusually cheap food, as it may indicate the use of substandard or adulterated ingredients. Always check for basic hygiene,” he said, urging people to report any suspected food safety violations.
