A stray dog was allegedly beaten to death at a housing society in Maharashtra’s Thane district, prompting police to register a case against unknown individuals, officials said.
The incident occurred on Sunday night in the Bhoirwadi area of Kalyan. Videos circulating on social media reportedly show a group of people moving through the residential complex carrying sticks. The dog was later found dead in the society’s parking area, with signs suggesting a violent struggle.
A complaint was lodged by a local animal feeder, after which members of the Plants and Animals Welfare Society (PAWS) escalated the matter with authorities. Based on the complaint, police registered a case on Monday under provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, against unidentified persons.
Officials from Khadakpada police station said they are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the परिसर to identify those responsible.
The incident follows another recent case in the same society. On March 27, a 43-year-old woman who feeds stray dogs alleged that a resident threatened to poison the animals after a minor was bitten. Police had registered a case of criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in that matter.
