New Delhi: A 32-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her husband, who struck her repeatedly with a small LPG cylinder inside their home in southeast Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur area on Sunday night, police said.
The accused, identified as Suresh Kumar, was taken into custody after neighbours alerted authorities upon hearing screams from the couple’s flat in DDA Janta Apartments. Police personnel reached the spot around 9 pm and found the woman, Poonam, with severe head injuries. She had died by the time they arrived.
The incident occurred in the presence of the couple’s younger daughter, aged around one-and-a-half years. Their elder child, a four-year-old, lives with grandparents.
Poonam, a graduate from Rajasthan, was a homemaker. Suresh works as a manager at a multinational company dealing with cargo and logistics in southeast Delhi.
Preliminary investigation suggests the assault was triggered by an argument over financial support for Suresh’s brother. During the altercation, he allegedly attacked Poonam with the LPG cylinder, causing fatal injuries.
Police said the couple, who married in 2020, had a history of marital discord. After living together for the initial years of their marriage, Poonam had moved back to her hometown in Churu, Rajasthan, and had only returned to Delhi about two months ago to stay with her husband and child.
A case has been registered under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said further investigation is underway, and the post-mortem report is awaited.
