The first human recipient of Neuralink’s brain implant, Noland Arbaugh, has shared a detailed 100-day update, describing his experience as “science fiction that somehow became my everyday reality.”
Arbaugh, who has been paralysed from the shoulders down since a 2016 diving accident, received the Neuralink N1 implant, a brain-computer interface (BCI) designed to translate neural signals into digital commands.
From surgery to activation
The implant procedure, according to Arbaugh, was relatively smooth:
- A small incision was made under general anaesthesia
- A robotic system implanted 1,024 ultra-thin threads into his motor cortex
- He was discharged the next day
By the end of the first week, his recovery was well underway, and he reported feeling mentally sharper and more positive once the device was activated.
Controlling a computer with thoughts
Within two weeks, Arbaugh began using the implant with an Apple MacBook:
- Cursor control using pure thought after a short calibration
- Gradual mastery of scrolling, clicking, and typing
- Transition from beginner to confident user within weeks
He described the experience as initially unfamiliar but quickly becoming intuitive—“like remembering a dream.”
Gaming without hands
By around Day 80, Arbaugh took things further by playing World of Warcraft entirely hands-free.
“No mouse, no keyboard—just intention,” he wrote, adding that once his brain synced with the system, the experience felt seamless and “addictive.”
A glimpse into the future
Now 100 days in, Arbaugh says the implant has transformed not just how he uses technology, but how he lives:
“The N1 didn’t just give me a new way to use a computer—it gave me a new way to live.”
While the device is still in clinical trials, his experience highlights the potential of brain-computer interfaces to:
- Restore independence for people with paralysis
- Redefine human-computer interaction
- Open new possibilities in assistive technology
