A container ship operated by German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd was struck near the Jebel Ali port in the United Arab Emirates, resulting in a fire that has since been extinguished, according to company officials.
The vessel, named Source Blessing, was hit by fragments, Nils Haupt, director of communications at Hapag-Lloyd, told The Wall Street Journal. The incident caused a small fire onboard, but the blaze was brought under control. No crew members were injured in the incident.
Haupt noted that navigation conditions in the Persian Gulf have become challenging. “It’s now very difficult to sail in the Persian Gulf,” he said.
The company has not provided further details about the nature of the fragments that struck the vessel or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
