BAREILLY: A 27-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district was critically injured after a military projectile struck a residential area in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, amid the ongoing Iran–US–Israel conflict, officials said.
The injured man, Mohd Azam, a resident of Jafraabad village in the Thakurdwara area, had travelled to Saudi Arabia around three-and-a-half years ago to work as a diesel mechanic. He is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in critical condition in a hospital in Riyadh.
Azam’s brother Kasim Ali said the family learned about the incident through one of Azam’s colleagues.
“I came to know that he is critical and is in ICU,” Ali told reporters on Tuesday.
Family members said Azam had gone abroad in search of better livelihood opportunities and was the main financial support for the household.
“He had gone there to earn a livelihood. Now we are told he is badly injured and on a ventilator. We are poor people and request the government to help ensure his treatment and bring him back home,” Ali said.
The incident has caused concern in the village, where several residents are employed in Saudi Arabia.
According to the Saudi Civil Defence, emergency teams responded on Sunday after a military projectile fell on a residential site belonging to a maintenance and cleaning company in the Al-Kharj governorate.
The strike reportedly killed two Bangladeshi nationals and injured 11 Bangladeshi residents along with Mohd Azam, while also causing property damage.
The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia confirmed that no Indian nationals had died in the incident.
“It is a matter of relief that there has been no Indian fatality in the unfortunate incident at Al Kharj,” the embassy said in a post on X.
It added that Counsellor (Community Welfare) Y Sabir visited Al-Kharj and met the injured Indian national, who is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital in the city.
Meanwhile, Azam’s family has appealed to the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure proper medical care and facilitate his return to India as soon as possible.
