BHOPAL: Police have registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against an unidentified man after a 27-year-old woman alleged that he duped her of cash and gold jewellery by posing as a paramilitary personnel on a matrimonial website.
According to police, the woman came into contact with the accused a few months ago through an online matrimonial app. The man introduced himself as a jawan posted with a paramilitary force and assured her of marriage.
During their interactions, he allegedly claimed that he was being transferred to Siachen and had shot himself in the hand to avoid the posting. He further told her that his organisation had suspended him for six months and imposed a hefty penalty.
On the pretext of paying the fine, he sought financial assistance from the woman. Believing his story, she transferred Rs 1.20 lakh to his bank account as a one-month loan. When she later asked for the money to be returned, he reportedly asked her to come to Delhi to collect it.
The woman travelled to Delhi to recover the amount, but instead of repaying her, the accused allegedly told her he would visit Bhopal to settle the dues. He also convinced her to hand over her gold chain, advising her not to wear jewellery while travelling.
After returning to Bhopal and failing to contact him despite repeated attempts, the woman approached the police and lodged a complaint. An investigation is underway.
