NEW DELHI: Russia on Wednesday said it has no reason to believe that India is reconsidering its oil purchases from Moscow, while reaffirming its readiness to continue close cooperation with New Delhi in the energy sector.
In a post on X, the Russian foreign ministry said India’s imports of Russian hydrocarbons are “mutually beneficial” and play a role in maintaining stability in the global energy market. “We are convinced that India’s purchase of Russian hydrocarbons is mutually beneficial and contributes to maintaining stability in the global energy market,” the ministry said, adding that Russia remains ready to deepen energy cooperation with its Indian partners.
The statement follows Russia’s assertion on Tuesday that it had received no official communication from India indicating any halt in purchases of Russian oil.
The remarks come a day after US President Donald Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “agreed to stop buying Russian oil, and to buy much more from the US and, potentially, Venezuela.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump—who spoke with Prime Minister Modi on Monday—said India and the US had reached a trade agreement under which Washington would impose a reduced reciprocal tariff on New Delhi, cutting it from 50% to 18%.
