Ahmedabad/Nadiad: The suicide of a 21-year-old nursing student and the note he left behind have sparked widespread concern in Nadiad, following allegations that he was wrongly accused of body-shaming a professor.
Jay Vijaykumar Patil, a first-year student at Dinsha Patel Nursing College, was found hanging at his residence in the Manjipura area on Monday. He had enrolled in the nursing course just three months earlier, in October.
Suicide Note and Allegations
In a suicide note addressed to his mother, Jay denied the accusations against him, stating that he had never body-shamed any female professor and was being falsely implicated. He wrote that he was deeply distressed by being misunderstood and humiliated and felt he was being blamed without evidence.
The note, now in police custody, reflects his emotional turmoil. Jay said he was willing to accept punishment for any genuine mistake but felt he was being unfairly targeted.
Family’s आरोप (Allegations)
Jay’s father, Vijay Patil, has accused the college administration of subjecting his son to undue pressure and isolation. He told police that he had been summoned to the college a few days before the incident and informed that his son’s behaviour was under scrutiny.
According to him, authorities had warned that a leaving certificate could be issued if there was no “improvement.”
“The teachers isolated my son. He was under extreme pressure for the last three days and had slipped into depression,” Vijay said, demanding strict legal action against those responsible.
College’s Response
College authorities have denied any wrongdoing. Principal Virendra Jain said that complaints had been received about Jay’s conduct and that teachers had intervened when boundaries were allegedly crossed.
He added that Jay had submitted written apologies on three occasions for alleged misconduct.
“Two days before the incident, we held a meeting with the student’s mother. We tried to counsel him and resolve the issue amicably,” Jain said. “Whether this amounted to corrective action or mental harassment will be determined by the inquiry committee.”
The college has constituted a high-level internal inquiry committee and recorded statements from teaching staff, including three female professors who regularly taught the class.
Police Investigation
Police in Nadiad have registered the case as an accidental death and are investigating the circumstances leading to the suicide. Officials are examining Jay’s mobile phone records and recording statements from family members and college staff.
Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
