KANPUR: A 25-year-old research scholar at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur died after jumping from the sixth floor of a multi-storey building on the campus on Tuesday, police said.

The student, identified as Ramswaroop Ishram, reportedly jumped around 1.30 pm. He was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Ishram, a native of Giriwarsar village in Rajasthan’s Churu district, was pursuing a PhD in the department of earth sciences. He lived with his wife Manju and their two-year-old daughter in the New SBRA building on the IIT campus.

Family members told the police that Ishram had been suffering from an anxiety disorder and was under stress due to health issues. His wife said he had been undergoing treatment for depression. Police confirmed that no suicide note was found. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.

ACP Kalyanpur Ashutosh Kumar said, “He was undergoing treatment for depression linked to illness. No suicide note has been recovered. Further investigation is underway.”

In an official statement, IIT-Kanpur expressed grief over the loss. “With profound sorrow, IIT-Kanpur mourns the tragic and untimely demise of Ramswaroop Ishram, a PhD scholar in the department of earth sciences. He was a promising researcher who joined the institute in July 2023. The institute extends its condolences to the bereaved family and prays for strength during this difficult time.”

The incident has once again drawn attention to student deaths on campus. On December 29, 2025, Jay Singh Meena, a final-year BTech student in the department of biological sciences and bioengineering, was found dead in his hostel room. He had joined the institute in 2020.
