Bengaluru: A 37-year-old woman and her eight-year-old son were killed after being run over by a college bus near the Vivek Nagar bus stop on Srinivagilu Main Road on Monday morning. The accident occurred between 6.45am and 6.50am as the mother and child were walking to school.
The victims were identified as Sangeetha, originally from Sangam in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district, and her son Partha, a Class II student at Army Public School. Sangeetha worked as a helper at the same school. The family lived in Andhra Colony, Vivek Nagar.
Police said the bus (registration number KA-51-AL-7920), belonging to Jain (Deemed-to-be) University’s Global Campus in Kanakapura, hit the pair while they were crossing the road. Both suffered critical injuries and died on the spot.
The driver allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled, reportedly fearing retaliation from local residents who had gathered at the scene. He was later arrested and identified as Sunil (24). Police said his alcohol test was negative.
A senior police officer said the bus was ferrying college lecturers at the time of the incident. “The driver was taking a right turn and failed to notice the woman and her son crossing the road,” the officer said.
The bodies were sent to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital for post-mortem examination and were later handed over to the family. Police removed the bus from the spot to clear traffic. Ashok Nagar traffic police have registered a case against the driver and are investigating the incident.
