A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a woman during a major immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis, an incident that was captured on video and quickly spread across social media. US President Donald Trump described the footage as “a horrible thing to watch,” calling the woman involved a “professional agitator.”

The shooting occurred amid an already tense immigration crackdown by the Trump administration in Minnesota. Federal authorities confirmed the incident, stating that the woman—driving an SUV—was part of a disturbance and attempted to run over law enforcement officers. ICE said the officer fired in self-defence.

Video clips circulating online show a Honda SUV apparently blocking unmarked law enforcement vehicles on a snow-covered street. As officers approached and tried to open the driver’s door, the vehicle reversed slowly and then moved forward as if attempting to flee. An officer positioned in front of the SUV fired three shots at close range. The vehicle travelled a short distance before crashing into a parked car.

Local media identified the driver as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. She was shot through the driver-side window as the SUV pulled away.

Reacting on his Truth Social platform, Trump alleged that the woman had tried to “viciously” run over an ICE agent. He said the officer appeared to have acted in self-defence and was recovering in hospital. Trump further blamed what he called “Radical Left” violence against law enforcement, arguing that ICE agents were under constant threat while carrying out their duties.

ICE agents have been central to the administration’s push on immigration enforcement and deportations, despite resistance from some local leaders. Last summer, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a recruitment drive to add 10,000 ICE agents to its existing force of about 6,000, drawing criticism over training and preparedness.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said “any loss of life is a tragedy” but labelled the incident “domestic terrorism.” She alleged that Good had been stalking and obstructing ICE operations throughout the day and later “weaponised her vehicle.” DHS, which oversees ICE, said on X that the officer fired “defensive shots” after an attempted ramming.

What’s happening in Minneapolis?

The administration deployed hundreds of federal agents to Minneapolis in what officials called the largest immigration crackdown in the state in recent years. The operation sparked protests across southern Minneapolis.

Mayor Jacob Frey said he was aware of the ICE-related shooting and demanded that federal immigration officers leave the city “immediately.”
“The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” Frey said, adding that the city stood “rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said his office was working to gather information on the shooting, as investigations into the incident continue.
