Pune: A 24-year-old software engineer working with a prominent IT firm in Hinjewadi was found hanging inside the restroom of the company’s canteen in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Vishal Gaikwad of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police said the victim allegedly used a mobile phone charging wire to end his life. “Preliminary inquiries indicate that the techie took the extreme step after suffering financial losses in online betting. A case of accidental death is being registered at the Hinjewadi police station,” Gaikwad said.
Police said the incident occurred between 12.30 am and 12.45 am. The software engineer had entered the company premises late on Monday night and gone to the canteen area. Before locking himself inside the washroom, he reportedly made distress calls to his uncle and other relatives, telling them about his losses and his decision.
Another employee later noticed him hanging in the washroom and alerted the police.
Senior Inspector Balaji Pandhare of the Hinjewadi police said the victim was a resident of Wanowrie in Pune and had joined the IT firm about a year ago. “A detailed panchnama was conducted at the spot, and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination,” he said.
