AHMEDABAD: A 50-year-old man convicted of killing his 10-year-old son died while on parole at his native village in Tharad taluka of Banaskantha district, police said on Thursday.

The deceased, identified as Damra Patel, was a resident of Ranisara village. He had been lodged at Sabarmati Central Jail after being convicted in the 2023 murder of his minor son. Patel was recently released on parole and had returned alone to his village home.

Police said Patel was found in a critical condition on Thursday and was taken to the government hospital in Tharad, where he was declared dead. His body was later sent for post-mortem examination.

Local residents told police that Patel had largely kept to himself during the parole period, avoided social interaction and remained indoors most of the time.

Tharad police inspector A.T. Patel said the man had been under considerable emotional stress since the incident involving his son. “He appeared deeply distressed and remorseful over the crime,” the officer said, adding that the circumstances surrounding his death are being examined.
