DHAKA: India and Bangladesh have initiated discussions on extending the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is due to expire in December 2026, 30 years after it was signed, officials said.
On Thursday, teams from both countries began joint measurements of water levels in the Ganga and the Padma rivers. The data will be recorded every 10 days until May 31. Officials said Central Water Commission deputy director Saurabh Kumar and assistant director Sunny Arora are currently in Bangladesh, while a four-member Bangladeshi delegation is in India.
A senior official from Bangladesh’s water resources ministry, Shibber Hossain, said “special attention” was being given to the security of the Indian team during the exercise.
