Chikkaballapura: A day after four youths were killed in a late-night road accident near Ajjavara Gate in Chikkaballapura taluk, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh each for the families of the deceased.
Holding an overspeeding tipper responsible for the crash, Chikkaballapura MLA Pradeep Eshwar said dense fog and poor visibility had also contributed to the tragedy. He criticised district officials for failing to curb speeding by tipper vehicles, alleging that enforcement by lower-level officials was often discouraged during departmental meetings. The MLA said he had directed authorities to take strict action against vehicles flouting speed limits.
Meanwhile, Chikkaballapura police arrested the tipper driver. Police said the four victims were returning home from a Christmas prayer meeting and had slowed down to take a right turn near their village gate when the tipper, approaching from the opposite direction, rammed into their motorcycle, killing all four on the spot.
