DHAKA: A key aide to Muhammad Yunus has resigned from Bangladesh’s interim government amid widespread unrest in several cities, including Dhaka, following the death of radical leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
Officials confirmed that Md Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, special assistant in the ministry of home affairs to the chief adviser, stepped down and that his resignation has been accepted. Sources, however, said he was effectively asked to quit in the wake of recent attacks targeting media houses, minorities, cultural organisations and political workers.
The violence erupted after Hadi died on December 18, six days after he was shot in the head, triggering protests and mob attacks across parts of Bangladesh.
Baksh’s resignation came the same day Hadi’s brother, Omar, alleged that a section within the Yunus-led interim administration was behind the killing of the so-called “July Uprising” leader. He claimed the act was intended to derail the national election scheduled for February 12.
