A rideshare driver identified as Simranjit Singh Sekhon, believed to be of Indian origin, has been arrested in California for the alleged rape of an unconscious passenger, authorities said.
According to a Fox 11 report, the incident occurred in November after Sekhon picked up the victim in Thousand Oaks. Although the ride was marked as completed, investigators allege that he continued driving the intoxicated passenger around Camarillo, where he sexually assaulted her while she was unable to resist or give consent.
The case came to light after the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit received a report of the alleged assault in November. Sekhon, 35, was arrested on December 15 and charged with the rape of an unconscious person. A court has set his bail at $500,000.
Police said they believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. Authorities have not disclosed the name of the rideshare company Sekhon was working for, nor have they released details about his immigration or employment status. His photograph has been made public as part of the investigation.
In a statement, police said, “The female was intoxicated and unable to care for herself. After the completion of the ride, Sekhon drove the unconscious victim around Camarillo and sexually assaulted her.”
The arrest has triggered reactions on social media, including posts criticising California Governor Gavin Newsom, as the incident took place in the state. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
