RAIPUR: In a shocking case from Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, a foster family allegedly kept a young woman confined to a room for nearly two decades—starting when she was just eight years old—claiming they were trying to “shield” her from a suspected stalker. Authorities discovered the situation when they arrived to rescue her from the room that had effectively been her prison.

Now in her 20s, the woman barely responds when spoken to, has severely damaged eyesight, and shows signs of deep trauma after years without sunlight, fresh air, or any social interaction, said Sister Clarelit of the Gharaunda Ashram in Korchuli near Jagdalpur.

Bastar collector Harish S told that the social welfare department is investigating the case as one involving “potential criminal negligence, unlawful detention, and violation of human rights.”

“Officials are questioning the family and examining the circumstances behind such prolonged confinement… Action will follow once the report is complete,” he said.

According to department sources, the foster family claimed they feared she would be sexually assaulted by a young man in the neighbourhood, whom they described as a habitual offender. They alleged he had shown interest in her and might have targeted her if she went outside.

Medical assessments suggest her eyesight is unlikely to recover fully. “The good news is she is slowly beginning to respond and can walk with support,” Sister Clarelit added.
