NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had a productive meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, noting the strong momentum in bilateral ties since their interaction at the G7 Summit hosted by Canada earlier this year.
“We agreed to further advance our relations in the coming months, particularly in trade, investment, technology and innovation, energy and education,”PM Modi said, stressing the untapped potential in India–Canada economic cooperation. He added that both sides have set a target of achieving $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, and highlighted the growing interest of Canadian pension funds in Indian companies.
PM Modi said the two leaders also agreed to deepen collaboration in defence and space and plan to meet again soon. Carney is expected to visit India in February 2026 for the AI Summit being hosted by the Indian government.
On the sidelines of the G20, the PM also met his Japanese counterpart, Sanae Takaichi. “We discussed ways to add momentum to cooperation in areas such as innovation, defence, talent mobility and more. We are also looking to enhance our trade partnership. A strong India–Japan relationship is essential for a better global future,” he said.
