SRINAGAR: Security forces on Friday foiled what they described as a “potential terror plot” in Jammu and Kashmir, seizing a cache of weapons and ammunition—including M4 rifles—during a search operation in Handwara, about 130 km north of Srinagar.

A senior police officer said the operation was based on specific intelligence inputs. “A joint team of J&K Police and the Army’s Naugam Brigade launched an operation in the Neeriyan forest area along the LoC in the Nowgam sector,” he said. The search led to the discovery of a major militant hideout, from which security forces recovered two M-series rifles with four magazines, two Chinese pistols with three magazines, two hand grenades, and several live rounds.

An FIR has been filed, and further investigation is underway, the officer added.

Meanwhile, in Srinagar and other districts, police continued inspections of doctors’ lockers in medical institutions. The exercise—initiated after the exposure of a white-collar terror network allegedly involving medical professionals—is intended to prevent the misuse of lockers for storing illegal or hazardous materials and to enhance internal security in healthcare facilities.
