NEW DELHI: In a sign of easing tensions between India and Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. This will be their second meeting this year.
The meeting was finalised weeks ago, as both countries seek to rebuild a relationship severely strained after the 2023 killing of a Khalistan separatist—an incident for which Canada accused Indian authorities.
Despite domestic pressure to demand accountability from India, Carney has pushed to reset ties since June, when he invited Modi to the G7 Summit hosted by Canada and also held a bilateral meeting with him there. During foreign minister Anita Anand’s visit to India last month, the two nations announced an upgraded relationship, releasing a joint statement outlining steps to restore normalcy, including reinitiating trade discussions.
Anand has repeatedly underlined that progress will depend on cooperation between law enforcement and public safety agencies in both countries. The joint statement emphasised the need for a constructive partnership grounded in respect for the rule of law, and a shared commitment to sovereignty and territorial integrity.
