In these initiatives, government entities and subsidiaries have liberated 923 lakh sq ft of space. The minister stated that the total area cleared in the last five special campaigns is adequate to accommodate a large mall or other significant infrastructure.
In 2021, the government decided to implement a special swachhta campaign from October 2 to October 31. The department of administrative reforms and public grievances oversees this initiative through collaboration among 84 central ministries and departments.
‘Emphasis also on transforming waste into wealth’
To ensure the effectiveness of the campaign, central ministers briefed officials, engaged with staff, and chaired review meetings focused on minimizing backlog. Likewise, specific tasks were assigned to secretaries and director generals, which included weekly reviews of the campaign and efforts to reduce pending matters. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) was tasked with mobilizing personnel for the cleanliness of outdoor areas across government offices.
Officials indicated that while every ministry and department should prioritize cleanliness and the reduction of physical files and outstanding references, these aspects receive particular attention during the month-long campaign, with a strong emphasis on how to convert waste into wealth.
