An avalanche struck a mountaineering camp on Mount Yalung Ri in eastern Nepal on Monday, killing seven people, including five foreign climbers and two Nepali guides, according to officials and news agency AFP.

Shailendra Thapa, spokesperson for the Armed Police Force, confirmed that five others were injured in the incident, which took place at the mountain’s base camp, located about 4,900 meters (16,070 feet) above sea level.

The nationalities and identities of the deceased climbers have yet to be confirmed. Due to challenging terrain and weather conditions, rescue teams are making their way to the remote site on foot.

Mount Yalung Ri, standing at approximately 5,600 meters (18,370 feet), is a popular destination for climbers seeking mid-range peaks in the Himalayas.
