KOLKATA: A 35-year-old man from Sonarpur’s Kustia was brutally murdered on Wednesday night after he switched off loud music that had been blaring continuously for three days during Kali Puja celebrations.

The victim, Sanatan Naskar, who worked as a peon at a private office, was allegedly stabbed to death by his neighbour following a violent altercation over the sound system used at a local puja pandal. Police have arrested Pintu Saha and his wife in connection with the murder and are searching for two of Pintu’s relatives who are absconding.

According to police sources, the neighbourhood had been playing loud music day and night for three consecutive days as part of the festivities. On Wednesday evening, a resident reportedly complained about the excessive noise, saying it was affecting a family member with a heart condition. Responding to the plea, Sanatan — who owned the sound system — switched off the speakers and returned home.

This angered Pintu and his associates, who had rented the equipment for the event. They allegedly barged into Sanatan’s home, demanding that he restart the music. When he refused, an argument broke out that quickly turned violent. The attackers reportedly assaulted Sanatan’s mother and brother before turning on him. During the scuffle, one of the men allegedly stabbed Sanatan multiple times.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. As news of the murder spread, locals caught Pintu and his wife while they were attempting to flee and handed them over to the Sonarpur police.

A senior police officer said, “Forensic samples have been collected from the scene, and further investigation is in progress.”
