NEW DELHI: A man in outer Delhi’s Nangloi allegedly fabricated a phone snatching story to escape his wife’s ire after misplacing his mobile while drunk.
On August 31, police received a PCR call reporting that a youth had snatched a phone near a tent house in Rajendra Park Extension, Nangloi. A police team reached the spot and met the complainant, Ashok Kaushik, who, officers said, appeared intoxicated.
Kaushik claimed that around 8pm, while riding his scooter to buy goods, a youth on a black motorbike had snatched his phone and fled. A case was registered accordingly.
However, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Sachin Sharma said that technical surveillance revealed no evidence of a snatching. “One CCTV footage showed a person running in the area, later identified as Sabar Singh, who was detained for questioning,” he said.
Singh told police that Kaushik, in an inebriated state, had asked to borrow his phone to make a call, but when refused, argued briefly and left.
Confronted with evidence, Kaushik admitted he had lost his phone on the way home and fabricated the snatching story to avoid being scolded by his wife. He even had her place the PCR call on his behalf, police said.
