NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza peace plan, calling it a “significant step” toward ending the long-running conflict.

Posting on X, Modi said: “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”

The statement came a day after Trump issued a dramatic ultimatum to Hamas, demanding agreement on his 20-point peace plan with Israel by Sunday 6 p.m. (Washington DC time) or face, in his words, “all hell, like no one has ever seen before.”

In a fiery Truth Social post, Trump declared: “Every country has signed on! If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL… will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.”

The ultimatum followed Trump’s unveiling of the Gaza plan earlier this week at the White House alongside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu. The framework includes immediate hostage releases, a full ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal, amnesty for Hamas members who disarm, large-scale humanitarian aid, and the creation of a temporary international administration to oversee Gaza’s transition into a demilitarized zone.

Hamas has responded by expressing conditional willingness to release Israeli prisoners—both living and deceased—under an exchange formula.

India, a longstanding supporter of a two-state solution and humanitarian relief in Gaza, has consistently called for restraint and dialogue. Modi’s endorsement signals New Delhi’s alignment with global efforts to secure a ceasefire, facilitate aid, and open pathways to eventual Palestinian self-determination.
