PATNA: Bihar has a major new infrastructure lifeline with the completion of the Aunta (Mokama)–Simaria (Begusarai) Bridge Project on National Highway-31. Built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of ₹1,871 crore, the 8.15-km project features a 6-lane extra-dosed bridge over the Ganga River, supported by 4-lane approach roads.

The bridge runs parallel to the aging Rajendra Setu, providing a modern, high-capacity link between North and South Bihar. Officials said it will not only improve road safety and ease traffic congestion but also serve as a dedicated route for heavy vehicles, which have long strained the overburdened Gandhi Setu.

With the new facility, freight and passenger travel between districts such as Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani and Araria in North Bihar, and Sheikhpura, Nawada and Lakhisarai in South Bihar, will be shortened by nearly 150 km.

Authorities expect the project to spur economic activity by improving logistics, trade and market access in the region. It will also strengthen connectivity to Simaria Dham, a key pilgrimage site and birthplace of celebrated Hindi poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.
